The Hyper Racer Australian Driver’s Championship concluded its 6 round season with the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series at One Raceway this month.
Amongst thrilling moments, multiple race winners and three drivers split between two points for the third step of the podium, championship leader Damon Sterling managed to set the fastest lap for the weekend; a new race lap record for the circuit just outside of Goulburn.
On lap 9 of race 4, Damon Sterling was leading the race with 2022 Hyper Racer Champion Dean Crooke less than half a second behind. In an effort to maintain the lead, Sterling pulled off an almost unbelievable 54.945 second dash around the newly refurbished track layout.
Those familiar with the old Wakefield Park will remember the previous lap record of 53.0 set by Brad Shiels in the Tilton Mitsubishi Evo World Time Attack car. With 150 metres of additional track length and three extra corners, Sterlings record comes awfully close!
Amazingly this was not Sterlings fastest lap of the weekend, setting a 54.2 in qualifying, a time his competitors could hardly believe, securing the 18 year old former go-karter’s status as a truly incredible driver and a worthy recipient of the title of 2024 Australian Driver’s Champion.
