With over 60 starters on the grid for this 77-lap racing endurance event, The Pitcher Partners Sydney 300 was a hugely successful event. The event also included two one-hour races for Excel for the Jeremy Hodge Memorial Cup.
First up, though, it’s worth acknowledging the most significant stat to come out of Saturday night… a fourth outright ‘300’ triumph for Todd Herring Racing.
It was his third Sydney 300 win, after 2019 and 2021. He also won the Wakefield 300 in 2021.
Prior to Saturday night, only TWO men, in the 16-year history of the concept, had achieved this milestone, namely Nathan Jess and Jake Shelley.
7 years, 6 months, and 5 days (or 2743 days) after Nathan Jess snagged his fourth ‘300’ win (on November 13, 2016, in Benalla), to equal Jake Shelley’s record, the elusive four-time club FINALLY has its third member.
Those two gentlemen (Shelley and Jess) are legends of the concept, there’s no doubt about that, but it would be worth arguing that they’ve been eclipsed by Todd, whose achievements have to be seen to be believed.
What he’s accomplished on his way to four outright wins, and how he’s done it, is extraordinary.
- All four wins have been achieved while competing in the outright Division (A)
- All four have been won from the front row of the grid (two from pole position).
- All four have been won in New South Wales (much like the record for Mitsubishi as a manufacturer; five wins, all in NSW – 4 in Goulburn, 1 in Sydney).
- Three of them have been a solo (driver) effort, and
- He becomes only the second driver to win three 300’s at the same venue (Jake Shelley the other, with three wins in four years, at what’s now known as One Raceway).
It could be a significant period of time before we see those records matched, or broken.
Welcome to ‘300’ immortality, Todd Herring.
