Record numbers for Winton Super Sprint

A record number of drivers have enlisted to take part in the opening round of the 2025 Winton Super Sprint Series this Saturday (April 5).

The series has continued to gain popularity year upon year, and 2025 appears to be no different, with Round 1 at the ‘Nation’s Action Track’ already boasting 75 entries, 20 more than the previous record.

There are new rules for the Sprint Series in 2025 to make the competition more exciting. This includes a new event format and points system.

Throughout the day every class will have 5-6 sprint sessions of 15-20 minutes, with each competitor trying to set the best lap possible.

Previously the session would commence with a standing start, the standing start lap would be combined with the best flying lap to determine the winner, but this has changed for season 2025.

The standing starts have now been eradicated; the winner is now determined utilising a points-based system.

Points will now be awarded based on fastest recorded lap from all sessions, with 25 for first, down to 2 for 11th and below.

Three bonus points are awarded for each sprint participated in, and a further 10 for participating in all.

The classes are as follows.

  • Road Registered: Up to 2L (A1) & Over 2L (A2)
  • High Performance: Up to 2L (B1) & Over 2L (B2)
  • Racing Cars: Up to 2L (C1) & Over 2L (C2)
  • Open Wheel/Clubman (D)
  • Juniors (E)

The Super Sprints are an affordable way of going motor racing, the entry fee is just $190 per driver/vehicle, and only $90 for 14–17-year-olds entering in the Junior class.

The entry fee includes and a garage or carport for the day, and if you are a Benalla Auto Club member you save a further 20% on your entry.

Trophies are awarded to first, second and third for each class at all four rounds, and overall trophies will be handed out at the completion of the final event.

Entries are open until Friday, so you still have time to compete this weekend.

The remaining rounds also take place at Winton on July 5, September 6 and October 18.

Also, at Winton on April 5, is ‘Cruise for the dream.’ This will see the cruise descend on Winton Motor Raceway at noon, creating a car display, with cars also completing parade laps of the track.

Entry is $10, with all funds going to John Giggins’ Dream, transforming his XD Falcon into a tribute to the iconic Dick Johnson TRU-BLU car.

Wangaratta local John has recently been diagnosed with terminal Stage 4 Glioblastoma.
